I can't be the only jewelry addict in the room can I? There's nothing quite like adding the final touches to a great outfit. Accessories add that finishing touch, it's like a bunch of little cherries on top that give you that 'umph' before stepping out. That sweet tooth for jewelry is what turned my on to starting Lateef Accessories. Now I want to share that fun and excitement!

On June 25th, July 2nd, and July 9th I'll be holding separate workshops (here) sharing, exploring and demonstrating how to create beautiful jewelry! All tools, beads, chains, etc will be provided. All you need to bring is yourself and be ready for 2 hours packing full gorging on all things jewelry! BYOB and bring a friend, the more the merrier!

The workshop will take place at Urban Matter boutique (www.UrbanMatterSTL.com) on 4702 Virginia Avenue, in a cute little space they have just for us set up. Feel free to stop by the boutique beforehand so you won't be distracted by all the goodies they have during class. Trust me, I've spent a good 45 mins deciding what and how many things I wanted to buy during my first visit!

Registration for our June 25th workshop will be closing this Wednesday, so if you're planning on taking the Thursday class, scurry on over to reserve your space now! Visit Dabble.co to register and secure your spot and I'll see ya there!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06021135126532006799noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3856384994940120750.post-88496946049422097832015-06-12T08:10:00.000-07:002015-06-22T08:13:42.527-07:00NEWS: LAPTOP COOLING STAND x ETSY

This week our red oak Laptop Cooling Stand was featured in Etsy Finds! If Etsy thinks we're cool, we kind of do too! These laptop stands are cut, stained and finished (quite tediously) by hand. These are definitely a customer favorite in our collection of home goods. Aside from united function, portability and classic design- these stands also LOOK really good! Pictures can't do a beautifully finished wood surface any justice. Sleek and stylish, there's no reason anyone wouldn't show these babies off around campus or at your local Starbucks. As a matter of fact I'm using mine now.

I was so happy to be able to participate in this years Spring Fling in the city event, produced and hosted by Shop Parsimonia. This event was jam packed with vintage, handmade and local goodness. There were tasty food trucks abound and I've gone as far as to adopt an official new favorite desert, Vincent Van Donuts. Thanks to the live music from local bands, dancing and merrymaking even the rain couldn't hold back such fun.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06021135126532006799noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3856384994940120750.post-86158656894089351812015-04-25T22:14:00.000-07:002015-05-03T22:19:04.914-07:00NEWS: LA X THIS COUNTS

It's been a long time coming, a parent company to house jewelry by Lateef Accessories, a pending wooden housewares and textile home goods as individual brands. I am ecstatic to be partnering up with Richard Diaz (my fiance) as we step towards the next chapter for our business.

We've scrutinized over a name that would fit which- for me, is the most exciting part. Ultimately 'Chantli' was the winner. I wanted a name that felt good not only to say and see, but in meaning as well. I always like to use words with a rich etymology and like 'Lateef' something ethnic. 'Chantli' means 'home' in Nahuatl, the indigenous language of Mexico. This was the one, simple yet it had roots, something that connected for both of us. Something that would ultimately connect for customers. The vision had suddenly become a little more concrete. The forthcoming parent company's launch date is to be determined, but I had to share this tiny step which houses so much excitement for the future!
For those who missed out on the 25% OFF PRE-SEASON SALE, there's another chance to strike while the iron is hot! There were no fair or events scheduled for the month of April for Lateef Accessories so I decided to arrange a little at-home-pop-up shop! In an attempt to move out old inventory and test new product all products will be offered at a fraction of regular prices. This is a great opportunity for those located in, near, & around the St. Louis area to skip on shipping costs! Yes, there will absolutely be hand stamped items being made on the spot for you to take home same night!
To add a little interest to the evening I've invited on board a licensed massage therapist for those who covet their lazy Sundays. I've also brought on Happy Hour, a brand that specialized in 'decoden' accessories. For the uncultured like moi, this is a super fun style of bedazzling. These goodies will be a great cap-off on the weekend for the partiers with a flask sized empty space in their purse.
Come enjoy a hodge podge night with some girl friends. There will be refreshments and don't forget to bring cash or credit to take home goodies. Email contact@lateefaccessories.com for location details.

This past Wednesday, July 7th, I was featured on Proclaim It blog-talk-radio show! I was connected to the show's host Aqueelah Sabriyah by my younger sister by chance via Twitter actually. Immediately Aqueelah reached out to me about an interview shedding light on the ins and outs of how I started Lateef Accessories. Also featured on the episode with me was Akilah Clark, Editor-In-Cheif of Nura Magazine.
It horrifies me a little bit to share this link (here) because the sound of my own voice makes me cringe. However, I won't withhold any potentially valuable info; especially considering how eloquently Alikah shared insight on operating her independent magazine. My greatest desire is to inspire and break away the illusion of limitation shackling the youth. I want to see the proverb 'where there's a will there's a way' ascend beyond cliche and into a common mentality. If I can somehow inspire that or plant a small seed in one person, I will content. That's my wish.
I have to say this was a really cool experience, the whole interactive atmosphere really interests me. I've never met either of these inspiring ladies which really speaks to the value in technology's ability to connect people. I wish nothing but the best for these young women in their endeavors and hope to connect and even meet in person in the future! Meanwhile, I'll be following them virtually and encourage everyone to do the same.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06021135126532006799noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3856384994940120750.post-60136067416331125322014-06-27T15:18:00.004-07:002014-06-27T15:18:40.549-07:00EVENTS: VINTAGE BLISS MARKETThis past weekend I had the great privilege of selling my goodies at Westport Plaza's Vintage Bliss Market, what an adventure! I really had a great time, of course omitting a certain storm threats. This was a 2-day event spanning Saturday (June 22nd) and Sunday (June 23rd). I have to give a special shout-out, however, to St. Louis magazine online columnist, Andrea Schmid. She wrote a little excerpt (here) on the event and mentioned my shop! Even more awesome, she and a friend payed my booth a visit to do a little shopping. Sweet girls! Please support and check out all of Andrea's work (here) as well!
Saturday was awesome, I met so many wonderful individuals with equally great products to offer. I had a job interview on location that ran long (good sign? :D) so I had to hustle to set up my tent and entire display as the event had already started! With the help of my dear Richard, we were up and ready to go in about an hour's time. Smooth sailing and selling. It was a blazing hot and humid day so at the end of the 8 hour day, we were ready to go home and pass out in some AC. We took everything to the designated storage facility, except my tent which we lowered and left held down by two huge bricks.

After an emergency email was sent out Saturday evening alerting us that the storm had blown tents all over the Westport complex, Richard and I knew we were in for a real treat Sunday morning. We get to the plaza and immediately run into Emily Lewis (awesome, hard-working woman who orchestrated the entire event!). We follow quietly behind her when finally she shows us the dumpster area of the plaza. I was horrified! There was a big mound of tangles of tents, broken legs, ripped tarps; it was total devastation. My heart immediately sunk knowing that it was impossible for my cheap little EZ-up to have survived. I collapsed against the wall ready to dedicate about 10 minutes to crying and feeling sorry for myself when Richard pulls out this perfectly folding tent from underneath the rubble! My God, I could've went on and cried from the pure miraculousness of it! My tent, the lone survivor.
We take the tent and examine it; it has been bent is several areas and snapped in two parts of the infrastructure. We weren't sure if it could be saved but we tried anyway. My dear vending neighbor offered us tape and anything else we might need to save the tent. We made magic with that damn duct tape! She helped us put it and brought the tent to life! Yes! We sold for a few hours but with the threat of another impending storm, we played it safe and closed down. An weekend of both trial and triumph, a weekend I'm so happy overall to have had. Great times.
Near the beginning of this month I received a Facebook message inviting me to answer some questions for an interview with Ozone Apparel's blog. This past week I finally got the chance to look at it and really answer everything to the best of my ability. I wanted to answer each question but make it interesting as well. I hope the interview might answer any questions, regarding myself in relationship to my brand, to anyone curious enough. So, here is the link: ozone-apparel.com. Please don't hesitate to comment or leave questions in the comment section below the article as well.
I'm so happy to announce the Spring/Summer 2014 menswear collection has officially launched and can now be shopped! I was waiting to edit the menswear photo shoot images before launched but decided against it because I just wasn't pleased with the outcome. I especially didn't want to further delay those who pre-ordered pieces.

I chose the name, Ahmir, meaning 'prince' as a representation of what this collection meant to me. It's not the pinnacle of where I want my menswear to be, this department is still growing. It is, however, like my second child and means a lot to me as far as growing Lateef Accessories into an umbrella brand. I'm really looking forward to designing more and giving the men's line more variety and life!
Here's to moving forward! :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06021135126532006799noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3856384994940120750.post-36817381272701027622014-06-02T08:01:00.000-07:002014-06-23T08:16:06.491-07:00COLLAB: LEE WOODS x LATEEF ACCESSORIES 2

It's finally here! New music video by talented artist Lee Woods. She's rocking a few of our goodies! S/O to stylist Samantha Sunderhuse again for orchestrating the collab. She decorated Lee's finger with plenty of our midi rings, nail frame rings, a ring bracelet, and anklet. I think it's safe to say I'm in love! Pending the release of Lateef Accessories, my excitement is bubbling over so I’m sharing behind the scenes stuff! Since I’m always making connections in Chicago, this time I wanted to work with someone local in St. Louis. Out of experimentation I reached out to Semaj Hawkins, whom I knew does a lot of shoots and was pleasantly surprised at the outcome! I called on King of the dancers, Richard Grzelka to come in and model everything. After a night of about 2.5hrs worth of sleep, needless to say I was running on fumes. Despite my zombie-like state, I enjoyed my conscious moments working in the studio with these two. Definitely a chill, hella cool, environment with lots of laughs and chatter!

I have to give a big thank you to miss Samantha Sunderhouse, who presented me with the opportunity to jump on board the project. While I’m shouting her out let me just direct you to her shop Treat Yourself Vintage because not only is she hella cool, she very appropriately sells some hella cool stuff! Samantha styled the upcoming shoot for sing Lee Woods’ TBA video and invited me to lend jewelry for the project. I of course said ‘Of course!’ and send over everything I could make in time for the video. I’m so excited about the project, the stills I’ve been shown so far look phenomenal, I can already tell it’s going to come out nicely.

I had the pleasure of meeting singer Lee Woods (very talented girl) at California Nights. California Nights was an event I sold Lateef Accessories at in Humbolt Park in Chicago last month (again invited by Samantha! You see why I love this girl?)! Anywhoo, I got to meet Lee and after she played a couple tracks for me, all I can say is I hope she doesn’t forget the little people LOL. I can’t wait until the video releases, I will be posting everywhere high and low! Exciting times in 2014.

Designer Hassani Hamilton, a former Art Institute classmate of mine and Fashion Merchandising major, has been hard at work developing his namesake brand. This is a really talented guy with an eye for true style. He possesses a clever aesthetic merging classical (and sometimes architectural) elements with urban design. A refreshing combination. I definitely recommend checking this young entrepreneur out! I believe he updates his website per collection, which is HassaniHamilton.com. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the SS’14 Menswear shoot which aligned closely with the projected launch of my first menswear line, perfect. Of course, I accepted, and on I went to the photo shoot to work with some really down to earth, really cool individuals -on a really cold day. Despite the element though the energy was great and the photos came out amazing! Above are sample images of post cards I'm going to be handing out at this years Saviours' Day 2014! Featured on the post cards are two of the new pieces from my Anah Collection (Resort 2014). I went for the double sided post card with womenswear on one side and menswear on the other! One thing I've been wanting to venture into more is menswear and appealing to that audience/market. So m next collection will, probably, be specifically for the men.

By God's good grace I will be there at SD vending and doing so under the Inspired Youth umbrella! I was definitely unsure if I would be able to participate. I will be vending alongside Qadirah Muhammad (of Qrochez), Nazirah Muhammad (of Odara Creations), Nehanda Muhammad (Nehanda), Kiana Muhammad (of Kreative Krafts), Saffiyah Muhammad (of Black Rose Creations), and last but most certainly not least Naeemah Muhammad (of Qweens Fashions).

This is particularly exciting for me to be able to meet for the first time some of these ladies and interact in a Muslim creative environment! We recently launched a campaign to raise $400 to purchase our vending booth with great success! I think it's safe to say THANK YOU to all those who showed their support and by giving so selflessly and generously!

This untitled pendant has been the source of much angst and also much excitement. It's the introductory manifestation of a significant yet frightening chapter in my life to come. All along I've been wanting to get my jewelry business off the ground and start a semi-fine and precious jewelry line. Truthfully, my own dreams frighten me. I'm not so sure if it's success I fear so much as it is the fear of failure. This untitled pendant has been sitting around for months waiting to be completed, to be touched for that matter. Finally, just a few days ago I finished it! Instead of feeling relieved I feel anxiety on some twisted level. During all those months of procrastinating and making up excuses, I was convincing myself I didn't have all the tools (or capacity) to complete the task.

I understand now what that procrastination really was, completing the pendant marking in my mind accountability. That once I was able to successfully metalsmith something I would then have no excuse for not going further with jewelry-making. Metalsmithing is my passion, what I intend to do in life, meeting that at the front door scared me. So putting off this piece meant putting off that challenge to rise to the occasion. Putting off rising to the occasion meant deviating failure. How do I know my products will sell? That was one of my largest concerns that I wanted to avoid dealing with.

On a lighter, brighter, and more optimistic note, I am going to push past that fear that has crippled my ability to be productive. Last but not least, I finally finished the pendant and (though I see all the errors) I think it looks pretty great! My plans now are to start a high price-point line of semi-fine jewelry. For now they will only be brass, however, I do at some point plan to venture out into sterling silver and MAYBE gold. For 2014 my greatest desire is to become more productive and insh'allah (God willing) my business will be a healthy reflection of that and grow with me. ❤

I'm not sure what sparked it, however, recently I've been re-inspired to illustrate again. I haven't tried my hand at that in at least a good two years I'm sure of it. I'm nervous. I'm rusty, have probably forgotten how things flow and I'm not sure how to pick up where I left off in terms of style development. What I do know though, in retrospect is where some improvement can be made looking at my old work. Areas that could've been tighter, where I could've been more patient and thorough, and even tweaks in stylizing. That is what makes me confident I can do this illustration thing again (with a little work and brushing up granted) and be even better than before.

Thinking to myself my number one goal is developing my own style. I want my struggle areas to become more stylized so that they look purposeful and give character. This, I think, is possibly the best way to embrace myself as an artist, working with my strengths and weaknesses to mold my style.

I've been trying to think unique ways to display my jewelry digitally and this is by far my favorite! I thought superimposing my jewelry on top of some of my favorite designs would be a really fun and clever way to help communicate the aesthetic of Lateef Accessories. This was really simple and just perfect way of doing that. I love it especially in regards to the contrast of choosing minimal, white, monochromatic subjects so the jewelry would 'pop' off the image. I had a lot of fun making these and hope to do a lot more! Perhaps I'll do a cool collection for each season of jewelry or something. I don't know, it's definitely a fun idea to play around with! ❤

About a month ago I got an email from Storenvy contacting me about being one of their featured stores! Of course I said yes and proceeded to answer questions and write a mini-essay about myself (*yawn*) and my shop (*yay!*). Fast forward to today and it's finally up! I'm on there! Well, my shop is on there, the featured stores page! So awesome.
I'm really ecstatic about this because although tons of other shops have been featured as well it just feels really good to be recognized. It's one thing to be one of the many, it's another to not be among that many! So cheers to small business and my little spotlight and millisecond of quasi-butnotreally-fame. I'm a happy camper. Click HERE to check it out!❤Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06021135126532006799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3856384994940120750.post-89138450938147883182013-12-02T12:00:00.000-08:002014-01-09T13:26:20.349-08:00WINTER ACCESSORIES

I finally did it, I finally budged and made an oversized winter infinity / circle scarf! I'm so excited to start working on a line of winter accessories. Right now I only have this circle scarf in the rich wine red color. I plan, however, to offer this scarf not only in various other solid colors but prints as well! I'm very picky about prints though so we'll see how that goes. I'm going to make another, smaller, more affordable version of this scarf for those who want the style on a tighter budget. Working on this scarf alone created a domino effect of ideas!
Somehow thinking about scarves has got me ready to get back into the bow tie making. I really miss experimenting with folds and origami to create some awesome, original pieces. Of course I don't have enough to catch up on and get done. I need an assistant! ...or maybe I just need a planner... or better organizing skills. Anywhoo, I do want to offer more men's accessories so I may just bring the archived bow ties out to play. Depending on sales, they may stick around and I may get my hands back into the craft and experiment with some new patterns! I'll post more about that when the time comes, meanwhile: I've got updating to do! I'm posting this new chunky winter scarf on Etsy and the website and to hopefully catch some eyes and sales! (I'm aware, I need better photographs, one step at a time :)❤
